Abstract To find a parking space in crowded cities is an arduous task, over 30% of the traffic in big cities is due to cruising drivers finding the vacant parking space. In Delhi only 40% of the road space is being used for parking rather than traffic movement, it causes traffic jam, fuel consumption, CO2emission, etc. Roaming vehicles for parking in crowded and congested cities like Delhi consume over 3.9 million gallons of gasoline and emit over 60, 000 tons of CO2per year, because of such issues implementation of the smart parking system was inevitable. The proposed survey has deeply investigated about the existing intelligent parking systems and solutions around the world. Further, this research work also discusses about the smart parking technologies and applications, indoor and outdoor parking categorization, and several sensors that have been used. Also, it has briefly discussed about the adoption of fog computing in smart parking system, additionally some existing solution of fog computing in smart parking scenario has also been presented. Also, this research work critically analyzes the literature work and in the end the best adaptable approach is also suggested according to our analysis. © 2021 IEEE.
