Abstract Finding parking in congested areas, particularly during peak hours, remains a significant challenge despite advancements in smart parking technologies. Prior research has shown that traditional parking methods are not only time-consuming but also lead to increased fuel consumption and environmental pollution. While many studies have explored various smart parking solutions leveraging information and communication technology, the persistent issue of efficiently locating available spots continues to impact urban mobility. This study builds on previous works by presenting an enhanced smart parking framework aimed at improving parking efficiency through reduced vehicle parking time, fuel consumption, and energy usage. We propose a novel ripple-based parking space finding algorithm and evaluate its effectiveness against existing algorithms, including traditional DiG-Park and MPRP algorithm. Our findings indicate that the proposed algorithm achieved 98.35% accuracy in locating parking spots within a model of 1,800 vehicles and outperformed other approaches in metrics such as time taken, distance traveled, CO2 emissions, and fuel consumption. © 2024 IEEE.
