Abstract The rapid growth of population and urbanization leads to substantial growth in vehicular traffic. Most city planning authorities focus on smart parking systems to automate vehicle parking and reduce traffic congestion. Thus, the smart city and Internet of Things (IoT) data traffic is growing tremendously. Moreover, cloud and fog computing are becoming well-known for IoT traffic. As a result, the cloud becomes congested. To manage parking system communication, we proposed an efficient fog-based parking system with 5G wireless communication technology to allow low latency and green communication, reduce overloading, and make faster real-time computation. Each parking lot is connected with fog nodes, Road Side Units (RSU), cloud through 5G base station, and capillary connections (Wi-Fi, ZigBee) for parking-related services like vacant parking space searching, best possible slot allocation, parking slot reservation and nearest optimal parking lot identification concerning driver's destination location and preferences. Overall service delay, possible slot vacancies prediction, and parking cost estimation are three significant issues in this article. We simulated and compared the response time of the proposed model with the legacy models. The simulation results show the benefits of using fog computing over the cloud. © 2023 IEEE.
