Abstract For the development of smart cities and enforcing the Swachh Bharat scheme, there is a need to monitoring and maintenance of waste management through automation process. In the present scenario, the municipal corporations do not use any scientific methods for monitoring the waste management. Also, animals like cows, dogs, and monkeys come in contact with the dustbins resulting in the spread of several contagious and communicable diseases. In order to address these issues, this article developed a framework which is based on IoT that notifies the corporation/company to identify and collect the waste from overflowing dustbins. A mobile application is developed to supervise the data and includes extended functionalities to identify the location of the nearest dustbin, public tap and swachh toilets. The mobile application contains dashboards that works for different types of the users. global system for mobile communication (GSM) sends the data to a server equipped with Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). Arduino is used as a microcontroller to interface between the sensors. The framework was tested with interactive mobile based application, and it is proved that it was effective to the public and the administrator. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
