Abstract Effective waste management is crucial for sustainable urban development, particularly in developing countries where improper waste disposal leads to environmental pollution and public health hazards. This paper presents the Smart Bin system, an intelligent waste management solution integrating hardware and software technologies to enhance efficiency in waste collection. The system utilizes an Arduino Uno microcontroller, ultrasonic sensors to measure waste levels, odor detection, and a GSM module for real-time SMS alerts to municipal waste collectors. Additionally, it incorporates solar-powered energy for sustainability, an on-site decomposition unit for organic waste, and smart location awareness to optimize collection routes. A dedicated mobile application provides real-time notifications and monitoring, further streamlining the waste collection process. By automating waste monitoring and optimizing resource allocation, the Smart Bin system significantly reduces environmental pollution, improves urban sanitation, and fosters sustainable waste management practices. This innovation aligns with the goals of smart cities and contributes to cleaner, healthier communities. © 2025 IEEE.
