Abstract The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the healthcare sector has shown immense promise, offering transformative solutions that benefit both healthcare service providers and patients alike. This chapter delves into the myriad AI techniques deployed in healthcare, such as classification, prediction, personalised medicine and data enhancement. These techniques are reshaping traditional healthcare paradigms by promising more accurate diagnostics and tailored treatment approaches, which hold the potential to aid in disorders diagnosis, treatment planning, medical image analysis and surgical operations, thus revolutionising the way healthcare is delivered and experienced. Despite the innovative solutions offered by AI, the adoption of AI in healthcare poses significant challenges and prompts discussions about its future trajectory. This chapter also navigates through these challenges, discussing critical concerns regarding accountability, transparency, and the trustworthiness of AI. Therefore, the need for explainable AI models becomes increasingly pertinent, ensuring that AI-driven decisions are interpretable and ethically sound, establishing trust in AI systems that are crucial to their acceptance and effective utilisation within healthcare settings. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Connie Tee, Thian Song Ong, and Md Shohel Sayeed; individual chapters, the contributors.
