Abstract Cognitive computing, a subfield of artificial intelligence, has the potential to completely transform smart cities and healthcare, which is discussed in this chapter, demonstrating how AI-powered technologies are transforming urban environments and medical practices. By incorporating cognitive systems into the infrastructure of smart cities, resource allocation can be optimized, transportation networks can be improved, and citizen services can be enhanced. Successful cognitive technology implementations in cities such as Singapore and Barcelona are illustrated by case studies, easing the way for smarter urban living. In addition, cognitive computing provides healthcare providers with data-driven insights for accurate diagnosis, tailored therapies, and real-time monitoring in the healthcare industry. Exemplary examples of AI-powered telemedicine platforms illustrate how remote care and virtual meetings enhance access to healthcare and patient outcomes. To realize the full potential of cognitive computing in these crucial domains, however, ethical issues and responsible execution are necessary. © 2024 Scrivener Publishing LLC.
