Abstract Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are distributed collections of smart objects that can sense the data or information of the deployed hostile environment and transmit the data to the control station for further processing. One of the prominent applications of WSN is smart cities. Smart city is typically an urban environment infrastructure that employs cutting-edge technology and data-driven methodologies to improve the well-being of its residents, increase resource efficiency, and promote sustainable development. The important feature of the smart cities is seamlessly integrating Information and Communication Technology to efficiently manage urban services, infrastructure, and resources, with a focus on innovation, connection, and public engagement. In the smart cities, the vast volumes of sensitive data are generated and collected on demand. These generated data are needed to provide strong safeguards against illegal access, data breaches, and cyber threats. In this chapter, the requirements of security are analyzed along with the vulnerabilities, and various security techniques are presented to provide efficient security to WSN-based smart cities. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
