Abstract This chapter explores the role of wireless sensor networks for securing smart cities. After a brief introduction, the three major architecture infrastructures for implementing smart cities—edge computing, fog computing, and cloud computing—are investigated with an emphasis on security issues. Then some of the important critical security challenges encountered by smart cities are studied. These challenges include data-freshness, time synchronization, self-organization, and secure localization. Finally, the chapter concludes by discussing some samples of smart cities, such as environmental monitoring, intelligent traffic management, healthcare systems, and smart government, all with a focus on security considerations. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
