Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) utilizing Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is a transformative force in smart city development. The capability to gather and analyze live data enables city administrators to enhance decision-making and streamline urban services effectively. From transportation management to environmental monitoring, WSN-based IoT applications are wide and varied. With proper planning and implementation, WSN-based IoT has the potential to create sustainable and efficient urban ecosystems, shape the future of urban life, and pave the way for smarter and more connected societies. However, it is facing challenges. In this chapter, a detailed discussion on the characteristics and features of WSN-powered IoT has been carefully examined, exploring the complex relationship between WSNs and the advancement of intelligent urban environments. Subsequently, a comprehensive overview encompassing topologies, technologies, functionalities, constraints, and pertinent challenges within the domain of WSN-based IoT has been meticulously outlined. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
