Abstract Smart cities are a more effective urban management mechanism that complement some of the most advanced technologies, featuring multiple characteristics such as smart foundations, massive data, social governance and being people oriented. Environmental pollution and excessive energy consumption are key factors hindering the sustainable development of smart cities. In recent years, the development of the Internet of Things (IOT) has promoted the development of intelligent green buildings, which can leverage technological advances to efficiently manage assets, resources and services, improve overall building operations, energy access and consumption, and enhance resident experience. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the important role that IOT systems play in the construction and operation of green buildings, how they provide new opportunities for sustainable development, and the implications of existing green planning and successful cases in China for future research directions. © 2025, IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
