Abstract Green computing is becoming a smart technology for developing smart cities. Statistics have shown that 75 billion devices will be connected to the Internet of Things (IoT). This is an advanced strategy that is eco-friendly in nature and improves the quality of life within a township and creates a sustainable environment. As society and the environment is changing globally, smart cities are urbanized by improving waste management strategies and increasing energy production from renewables with the help of smart technological infrastructure such as green computing. The purpose of the smart city is to develop endlessopportunities for social, cultural, and economic growth among citizens to create a healthy and safe environment that stimulates a dynamic environment. In this chapter, a systematic study is conducted. The deployment of smart technologies such as AI-driven approaches for smart buildings, renewable energy models, and the IoT is discussed. The smart city promotes sustainability through an energy-saving scheme, reducing air pollution, preventing infrastructure failure using predictive analytics, and optimizing mobility in the transport system and the mobile cloud environment platform. This chapter highlights some real-world challenges for implementing smart digital technology in smart cities. The aim is to inspire researchers to cultivate innovative solutions for the advancement of the smart city with the help of green computing. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Neha Sharma, Jai Prakash Verma, Sunil Gautam, Valentina Emilia Balas, and Saravanan Krishnan; individual chapters, the contributors.
