Abstract The rapid growth of urbanization in densely populated regions has exacerbated challenges in waste management, including environmental degradation, public health concerns, and inefficiencies in operations. An IoT-based intelligent waste management system, incorporating advanced technologies, has been developed and implemented to address these issues. This system employs sensors to monitor the fill levels of waste bins and categorize waste into organic, recyclable, and non-recyclable types, enabling real-time data collection and analysis. LED indicators promote responsible disposal practices, while IoT-enabled waste collection vehicles equipped with GPS facilitate optimized route planning, minimizing travel distances, fuel consumption, and traffic congestion. A key innovation of this system lies in its ability to categorize waste, offering valuable data to recycling organizations and advancing circular economy objectives. The results highlight improved efficiency, lower operational costs, and prompt waste disposal. Additionally, the adaptable and scalable framework fosters community engagement through feedback mechanisms and aligns waste management practices with sustainability objectives. These results highlight the significant potential of IoT technologies to revolutionize waste management systems, offering urban planners and policymakers a viable approach to enhancing infrastructure and driving the advancement of smart city initiatives. © 2025 IEEE.
