Abstract The rapid growth of urban populations has led to increased waste production, challenging conventional waste management systems. This paper presents an IoT-based Smart Waste Bin System designed to optimize waste collection and enhance urban cleanliness. Equipped with sensors, the system monitors waste levels in real-time and transmits data via LoRaWAN or NB-IoT to a cloud platform. It triggers alerts for improper waste sorting and guides users on correct disposal. A compression mechanism activates at 70% capacity to reduce waste volume, and when the bin reaches 90%, the system notifies municipal authorities with GPS data. Instant data analysis facilitates efficient waste collection scheduling and route optimization, lowering operational costs and enhancing efficiency. The system supports sustainability by minimizing unnecessary collection trips and fuel consumption. Initial tests show its potential to improve traditional practices, contributing to smarter, cleaner cities and aligning with broader smart city strategies. © 2025, IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
