Abstract This study examines the effectiveness and impact of the Internet of Things (IoT) intelligent bins on the population's waste disposal within the urban setting. This paper provides its findings based on the six-month implementation in the metropolitan areas. Traditional waste management techniques sometimes face challenges that lead to environmental pollution and high operations costs. On the other hand, intelligent bins with sensors for real-time monitoring give continuous information concerning the amount of garbage; they improve the efficiency of collection routes and operations. In this aspect, intelligent trash bins, through IoT, increased garbage collection frequency by 50% and presented the following reductions of 66.7% in missed collections and 80% in overflow events. Such change improved the fuel consumption rate by twenty percent and the operating costs by fifteen percent. Moreover, intelligent bins have enhanced the recycling procedures whereby recyclables are sorted at the production area, which has resulted in the overall increase of the recycling rates by 25% and the proportion of garbage dumped at the landfill. However, there are some risks in implementing IOT-enabled smart dumpsters, which include high initial costs and technical challenges. In contrast, the benefits are massive. Through harnessing modern-day technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence in the management of waste, efficiency in waste management operations may be improved, hence promoting sustainability. This study also aims to reveal how the Internet of Things (IoT) intelligent bins can revolutionize garbage disposal in urban settings. © 2024 IEEE.
