Abstract For cities all across the world, handling the waste of garbage has become a significant apprehension as urban populations continue to expand rapidly in consecutive years. Smart cities are progressively implementing cutting-edge solutions that are formulated through the integration of trash management systems with mobility and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to effectively address this issue. IoT-enabled sensors and devices are utilized in the proposed waste management system to track and collect real-time data on garbage levels. This helps in the identification of bin statuses and collection routes. These sensors are installed in several waste collecting locations, including trash cans, recycling bins, and dumpsters, enabling ongoing research of waste generation patterns. A centralized platform helps to receive the collected data for analysis and decision-making. The system includes a fleet of linked rubbish pickup vehicles with GPS tracking, route optimization algorithms, and communication modules to increase mobility and efficiency. With the aid of real-time data, these vehicles are given routes that are dynamically assigned, which optimizes collection schedules and lowers fuel use and emissions. The IoT-capable sensors in the vehicles keep track of the waste capacity and send the data to the main platform, enabling proactive waste collection and preventing overflow. The core of the waste management system includes the use of cutting-edge analytics and machine learning with a virtual platform using IoT. It can help to identify hotspots, forecast trends in garbage generation, improve collection routes, and produce alerts for upkeep and service needs. Thus the proposed system provides a user-friendly interface. © 2023 IEEE.
