Abstract A smart city concept exploits data collection from sensors and external services to manage resources efficiently for the benefit of both residents and the environment. Pairing devices and data with a city’s physical infrastructure and services can help cultivate and improve a smart city ecosystem and determine a pathway to reach energy and climate targets. With an increased focus on day-to-day energy patterns in buildings, leveraging learnings and identifying practical steps from collecting and storing data close to the source is needed. This will provide facility managers and consumers with real-time reliable information, transforming data visualization into actionable insights. A proof-of-concept Internet of Things development framework and proposed use cases for collecting, monitoring, and controlling energy performance in a multistorey residential building are discussed. Designed to meet the needs of a pilot study, the Internet of Things ecosystem uses a combination of both low-cost and reliable hardware and open-source software connecting a variety of devices, each adaptable to support new work at scale beyond the initial pilot. © 2024 American Institute of Physics Inc..
