Abstract The Internet of Things is an emerging technology for the next generation of communications and will make many complex services like smart cities easier in the future; but, the explosive growth of the smart cities and IoT applications are challenging. Energy consumption and related costs in these cities has taken on new dimensions. This research provides an effective solution in smart energy to create a suitable platform for energy control and optimization. In this chapter, a combined model based on existing conceptual models, which is appropriate to use in smart cities is proposed. Accordingly, it is tried to increase the success of the model by using effective factors to develop the IoT framework, and based on successful models in the world, the proposed framework is the most suitable with specific features. In this research, various methods and tools that reduce energy consumption in these networks have been studied. The results show that the important factors that have the most influence on the proposed framework are, number of nodes to send or receive the data, sensors temperature, number of receiving or lost packet, structure and network topology, various nodes’ distances, memory size, processor performance and size of sensing nodes. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
