Abstract As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, people's online activities have increased significantly, which has created an opportunity for many to become more interested in metaverse technology. In response, this paper proposes a technology that enables real-time control and connection of various physical objects in smart cities within the virtual world, ensuring effective use of metaverse-like environments. This paper presents an architectural design for connecting real-world objects to the metaverse via IoT and edge technologies. Traditional metaverse design has relied heavily on a centralized cloud-based method, which often results in slower operation. On the other hand, the technology proposed in this paper enables new services by connecting IoT devices widely distributed in real life to the metaverse via edge computing and standards-based IoT platform technology. To achieve this, edge computing technology is applied to a IoT service layer platform using oneM2M global standards to enhance data transmission and facilitate real-time interoperability between the virtual and the physical worlds. Moreover, the proposed platform has the advantage of performing tasks with greater accuracy and speed, thanks to the addition of a function that allows for artificial intelligence to be performed at the edge node, thereby continuously strengthening the model. © 2023 IEEE.
