Abstract The rapid rise of digital technologies has led to the emergence of the metaverse, a virtual space that mirrors or transcends the physical world, enabling interaction with the real world. This development has prompted new policies to guide its commercialization and foster integration with the Internet of Things (IoT). By linking the metaverse and IoT, users can control real-world objects in a virtual setting, expanding opportunities for innovative business models and creative applications, particularly in smart city development. However, the metaverse’s potential for IoT and smart cities faces challenges, including a lack of standardized systems, unclear technical frameworks, and concerns over blockchain, AI, data security, and privacy. This paper explores the technologies and applications of the metaverse for IoT and smart cities, proposing a framework and key application scenarios. The goal is to accelerate the metaverse’s practical use, supporting its transformative role in urban innovation and smart city development. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
