Abstract By focusing on space management and infrastructure investment planning practices in selected cities in the European Union (EU), this chapter delves into the intricacies of de facto smartification of these cities. Against the backdrop of literature review, analysis of official Internet portals, an online survey (n = 25), and individual direct interviews with city representatives (n = 9), selected practices related to smartification of public space management are identified and discussed. By so doing, the chapter offers insights into the variety of solutions and practices that are employed by city authorities across the EU to advance public space management and are a source of both benefits and risks. The findings suggest that the benefits within the domain explored are citizenship involvement, socioeconomic impact and co-responsibility for local development processes, and lower costs of information for citizens and enterprises Research findings may be applicable in public governance practice and digital transformation planning. Scientific contribution and managerial applications of the chapter concern the context of introduction of digital twins and metaverse-related phenomena into smart city agendas. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Anna Visvizi and Hanna Godlewska-Majkowska; individual chapters, the contributors.
