Abstract The smart grid (SG) concept refers to a large system in which every operational component is under the control of power and energy, communication, and information logic strata. The prominent stratum of power and energy becomes more effective and smarter due to improved communication support and IT infrastructure sustainability. Due to modern urban planning and architecture, SGs currently are designed for developing and innovating fundamental services to transmit provisions that are better aligned with the materialistic infrastructures of smart cities. The extensive use of new message-passing techniques, changing environments, and energy efficiency are helpful in improving quality of life and meeting the requirements of citizens, managements, and organizations. With the emergence of powerful technology such as the Internet of Things (IoT), smart devices connect to the Internet and towns become smarter. At the same time, the connection faces challenges because it is not possible to maintain good data transmission quality over the Internet using these instruments. This chapter systematically presents the overview of the smart network grid with its operational challenges as well as how modern IoT protocols and IoT-based smart approaches specially designed for smart network grid applications are implemented in applications such as smart metering using micronetwork grids via IoT plug-ins and through smart devices with security provisioning. © 2021 Elsevier Inc.
