Abstract The rapid advancement of technology and the increasing need for sustainable energy solutions have driven the emergence of smart grids. The integration of smart grid technologies within urban environments offers numerous benefits, including enhanced energy efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. This book chapter provides an overview of the concept and technologies of smart grids in the context of smart cities. It examines the paradigm shift from traditional grids to smart grids, highlighting the benefits and advantages that smart grids offer. By incorporating advanced metering infrastructure, and communication networks, smart grids enable bidirectional flow of electricity, allowing for efficient management of power generation, transmission, and distribution. Moreover, the integration of renewable energy sources, demand response mechanisms, and energy storage systems optimizes energy usage, reducing the carbon footprint of cities. Through the examination of case studies and best practices, this book chapter highlights successful implementation of smart grid technologies in diverse smart cities, providing insights into the transformative potential of smart grids in building sustainable and intelligent urban environments. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Binbing Yu and Kristine Broglio.
