Abstract Providing sustainable and reliable energy is a crucial challenge for future smart cities due to soaring demands. To this end, intelligent tools have been adopted to migrate from traditional energy distribution systems to novel configurations labeled as smart grids. Smart grids technology attempts to promote competition, increase the safety of electrical systems, and combat climate challenges. On the other hand, the rapid evolution of computing devices and ubiquitous digital devices has led to the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) concept. The high reliability of smart grids on the communication technologies in exchanging information among various components provides an attractive application area for IoT. Even though this application seems appealing from industry and customer points of view, significant research efforts are still needed to investigate the potential benefits, threats, and challenges carefully. This chapter aims to provide a holistic image of the integration of IoT technologies in smart grids applications. We first overview the relevant concepts of smart grids and IoT and the connection point. Then, the architecture of the IoT-based smart grid will be discussed as well as the possible applications. The final section focuses on the current and expected challenges and the future perspective of implementing IoT in smart grids. The result shows that IoT provides a significant advantage in developing more efficient smart grids, but the multifaceted challenges should be addressed to improve and sustain dependable, intelligent energy distribution systems. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
