Abstract A necessary step in creating a sustainable, secure and resilient smart cities is the integration of renewable energy systems. The expansion of cities and the increasing energy demand make the adoption of the renewable energy technologies, solar, wind and geothermal power, vital to reduce carbon footprint and to create clean and highly efficient use of energy. Digital innovations such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain bring about a framework for smart city usage for renewable energy resources management and optimization. This chapter discusses technological, economic, and policy aspects of incorporating renewable energy into urban context from a perspective of smart grids, energy storage options, decentralized power generation, and intelligent energy management systems. However, there are tremendous benefits for the integration of renewable energy, from conservation of the environment, to economic progress, as well as augmentation of a community's resilience. Further research and advancement of the infrastructure to be able to overcome the technical challenges for instance the issues of energy intermittency, storage limitations, and the complexities of grid integration. Limited funds test economic and financial constraints, especially, the high initial cost of renewable energy projects necessitate innovative funding mechanism and supportive policy frameworks. There are also social equity concerns that must be managed that provide for the utilization of clean and affordable energy for all communities, regardless of income. © 2025, IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
