Abstract As cities are the locus of the majority of global energy use, attention is increasingly being directed toward what can be done to improve the sustainability of urban energy systems. One solution receiving attention involves the increased use of decentralized energy supply resources, which reduce the distance between the point where usable energy is created and where it is ultimately consumed. This chapter examines these technologies in light of the limitations and challenges posed by the existing electric grid and the promise of the much-touted 'smart grid'. The chapter presents a broader view of the urban energy system than is typically discussed, highlighting the role that shared thermal systems and electric 'microgrids' can play in providing a bridge toward a lower-carbon future. © 2012 Woodhead Publishing Limited All rights reserved.
