Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of interrelated, internet-connected of connected things, sensors, actuators, and other smart technologies, allowing for person-to-person and object-to-object communication. The IoT is one of the essential components of the ICT infrastructure of smart and sustainable cities as an emerging urban development owing to its immense potential to improve environmental sustainability. In recent years, the smart city concept has grown in popularity, and a significant number of cities around the world have adopted smart city strategies. STARDUST is an EU Horizon 2020 Smart Cities project to pave the way towards transforming cities into smart and improving overall energy efficiency and quality of life. Pamplona (Spain), Trento (Italy), and Tampere (Finland) are the 'light tower' cities of this project. This paper provides a brief description of smart cities' concept and the technologies involved in this concept. It also presents the experience of the city of Pamplona and its steps towards achieving the transformation into a smart sustainable city. Further, it highlights the applications, projects, and solutions launched to support it in this transformation. © 2023 Author(s).
