Abstract Cities will play a critical role in the energy transition of Europe. New urban planning concepts need to consider all the synergies among the different energy domains at district level, and especially in the Smart Cities, where ICT offer an excellent opportunity to integrate the optimized functioning of smart buildings, together with district energy networks, the integration of renewable energy sources in the built environment, and the deployment of e-mobility infrastructure. This paper describes the set of urban solutions adopted by three lighthouse cities in Europe (Pamplona, Tampere and Trento) in the frame of STARDUST Project (H2020-SCC-2017-774094) with a focus on the ICT enablers. This action plan has obtained significant results in terms of energy savings (11.7 GWh in buildings, 78.3 GWh in energy networks, and 9.5 GWh in smart e-mobility actions) and citizens' quality of life, considering social aspects and the economic perspective of their implementation. © 2022 IEEE.
