Abstract The research paper discusses the development of smart cities in developing countries, beginning with an overview of definitions and progress in smart city concepts. It then examines into the advancements and practices seen in emerging economies as they work towards becoming smart cities, highlighting key challenges and insights gained so far. The chapter also evaluates areas for improvement and identifies factors essential for a more seamless transition. A specific focus on smart city initiatives in Saudi Arabia “NEOM” is provided to extract valuable lessons and determine the path forward. Recommendations are made for various stakeholders—including the public, private, and international sectors—to enhance the transition and effectively tackle the urbanization challenges faced by developing economies. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
