Abstract System development in the twenty-first century has been associated with increasing complexity due to the networked connection of smart things, i.pe., cyber-physical systems (CPSs), including sensors, actuators, and recorders that monitor and directly influence the physical environment. Moreover, the integration of stand-alone CPSs that offer services beyond the services of any isolated CPSs creates a new category of complex integrated systems called the cyber-physical system of systems (CPSoS). A smart city can be defined as a CPSoS that facilitates the interaction between its CPSs, e.g., smart energy, smart transportation, smart communication, smart health, smart waste management, and smart education, functioning as a single integrated system to support a common mission. From a different point of view, these autonomous CPSs, across various domains, can be identified as a CPSoS likewise. The smart city energy infrastructure can exemplify this. A smart city energy infrastructure can be seen as a set of energy hubs (EHs) since real existing facilities can be considered as EHs. Based on the idea of this research, a smart city infrastructure consisting of different residential, industrial, commercial, official, educational, and critical areas can be viewed as a macro-EH (MAEH) system of micro-EHs (MIEHs). The MIEHs in smart city energy infrastructure are the same constituent CPSs that pool their capabilities to create a new, more functional, and reliable smart city energy CPSoS. Specifically, a smart city energy infrastructure is a multi-carrier energy system that provides various types of energy for autonomous consumption from the autonomous distributed generation controlled by local CPSs. Collaboration and interaction in smart city energy CPSoS can be possible through existing information, electricity, natural gas, and other urban infrastructures. While introducing and describing the related concepts, this chapter aims to discuss the planning, operation, and control/management process in smart city energy CPSoS. © 2025 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
