Abstract Information and communication technology (ICT) enables emerging Smart City paradigm and supports integrated, efficient and reliable operations of diverse critical Smart City infrastructure and services. Thousands of interconnected sensors, backbone communication networks and analytics platforms weave the complex cyber-physical systems (CPS) that are the focus of this book. This chapter discusses how transportation CPS must be developed in a way to allow integration with other Smart City components, such as energy CPS, civil infrastructure CPS, home CPS and healthcare CPS. This chapter starts with a holistic view of the Smart City vision in the context of systems of systems. Next, different emerging Smart City services and systems characteristics are discussed. Last, examples of Smart City deployments around the world are presented in this chapter along with an exploration of future research directions in this area. This chapter provides a comprehensive review to prepare professionals involved in designing and planning future Smart Cities in the context of rapid deployment of emerging ICT. © 2018 Elsevier Inc.
