Abstract Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are critical for emerging sustainable smart cities with interconnected computational, physical, and social domains. CPS involves mechanisms that require a multidimensional approach, and this chapter examines CPS's contribution to the realization of that system in urban problems related to efficiency, environmental control, and better quality of life. CPS facilitates realtime monitoring, optimization of energy use, intelligent transportation systems, and sustainable urban development through the use of advanced technologies such as IoT, AI, and data analytics. The chapter further showcases how engineering, the social sciences, and policymaking intersect and come together in approaching holistic solutions that complement sustainability objectives. Using a flurry of case studies and novel frameworks, it stresses the importance of collaboration across disciplines in developing adaptive, resilient, and ecologically sensitive smart city ecosystems. © 2025 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
