Abstract The adoption of self-driving technology will likely create new city typologies with unique buildings and needs starting from the empty parking lots to the various sensors and communication between several means of transport and signal systems.Although these technologies can be a great tool and facilitate the passengers’ movement and minimize travel time, careful implementation of city configuration and urban planning is needed when applied. This paper aims at examining possible changes in the new and smart cities associated with Autonomous and connected various modes of transportation.Such changes will help to maintain safety, sustainability, and walkability in the city while implementing such technologies.Careful examination of these technologies is needed to avoid possible undesirable effects on the structure of the city and most importantly the life of its residents. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
