Abstract This chapter discusses the implications for urban mobility and sustainability in spatial formations operated largely by artificial intelligence (AI), namely autonomous cities. First, we outline the shifting dynamics from the smart city to the autonomous city and how AI is manifesting itself in cities. Second, we discuss the main alterations that AI can inflict on the sustainability of the city and specific implications for AI-enabled mobility. In the third subsection, we delve deeper into how autonomous vehicles will change three fundamental areas of urban life around the tempo of the city, the form of the city and the right to the city. Fourth, we draw attention to the power dynamic between autonomous vehicles and cyclists and how this will implicate future mobility in the autonomous city. We conclude the chapter by highlighting the need for an approach to autonomous cities that incorporates participatory planning and human-centred principles. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
