Abstract The simultaneous use of artificial intelligence and blockchain technology redefines urban intelligent infrastructures by building resilient ecosystems for Internet of Things applications. It demonstrates the advantages of the convergence of blockchain, digital technologies, and artificial intelligence for IoT applications that are both intelligent and sustaining (Bhushan et al., 2020). The benefits of blockchain technology can facilitate the development of applications for sustainable smart cities. Artificial intelligence is a crucial direction in technology for unlocking novel perspectives that enable the applications of smart cities (Ismagilova et al., 2019). Moreover, the rapid adoption of blockchain technology contributes significantly to the continuing growth of the forthcoming digital smart city infrastructure. Thus, the combination of blockchain technology and artificial intelligence transforms smart city infrastructures to create sustaining ecosystems for Internet of Things applications. Additionally, various conceptual frameworks are discussed that are based on IoT devices, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence for analyzing and acquiring critical information, producing digital analytics, and storing the results in distributed cloud repositories and blockchain to assist various applications in smart cities. Nonetheless, these developments and technological developments present both advantages and disadvantages for developing sustaining Internet of Things applications. This chapter examines the combined power of artificial intelligence and blockchain technology for technological advancement in smart and sustaining Internet of Things applications [3]. It also presents frameworks that may aid researchers in identifying outstanding research directions and developing a useful incremental research program for industry and research. In addition, we discussed unresolved issues and our future research objectives, which may develop new concepts and upcoming standards for sustainable applications in the Internet of Things. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
