Abstract Smart cities are urban areas that use various types of electronic data collection sensors to supply information that is used to manage assets and resources efficiently. The use of blockchain technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in smart cities has the potential to enable secure and efficient communication and transactions, optimize resource usage, and improve services. However, there are also challenges and limitations to consider, such as issues related to data privacy and security and the potential for job displacement. Blockchain technology can be used to securely store and manage data related to smart cities, such as information about energy usage, traffic patterns, and public services. It can also be used to enable secure and efficient communication and transactions between different stakeholders in a smart city, such as government agencies, businesses, and residents. AI, on the other hand, can be used to analyze data collected from smart city sensors to identify patterns and trends and to make predictions about future events. This can help cities optimize their use of resources, improve services, and make more informed decisions. Despite the potential benefits of using blockchain and AI in smart cities, this research aims to explore the potential benefits and limitations of using blockchain and AI in the development of smart cities, with a focus on case studies of cities that have successfully implemented these technologies. The research will provide an overview of the state of the art in this area and will present a methodology for analyzing the benefits and limitations of blockchain and AI in smart cities. The research will also present results and discussion based on a review of relevant case studies and will conclude with a summary of findings and implications for the future development of smart cities. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
