Abstract The development of sustainable cities has become a crucial challenge for urban planners and policymakers, as the world's population continues to grow rapidly. The integration of Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has the potential to revolutionize the way cities are developed and managed, creating more sustainable and efficient urban environments. This chapter presents an AI and blockchain-enabled IoT framework for sustainable city development, which leverages the capabilities of these technologies to address key challenges faced by modern cities. The proposed framework uses AI algorithms to collect and analyze data from various sources, including IoT devices and sensors. It is further used to optimize resource utilization and improve overall city efficiency. Blockchain technology is used to secure the data collected from these sources and provide a transparent and immutable record of all transactions, ensuring the integrity and authenticity of the data. The proposed framework has several potential benefits for sustainable city development, including improved energy efficiency, reduced waste, and better management of resources such as water and transportation. Furthermore, the use of blockchain and its technology ensures the privacy and security of personal data collected by IoT devices, an important concern for many citizens. This chapter draws on a range of previous studies and research, including work on AI and IoT technologies, blockchain and smart contracts, and sustainable city development. The proposed framework is supported by several case studies and real-world examples, demonstrating the potential of this approach for creating sustainable, smart cities. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
