Abstract BIM and GIS technologies are widely utilized in the construction industry. These two technologies, when combined, offer numerous advantages, particularly in road and bridge engineering. By incorporating BIM + GIS technology, road and bridge projects within smart cities can fully leverage the benefits of these technologies, enhancing implementation and scientific precision. This research focuses on road and bridge engineering visualization and virtual reality technology, utilizing BIM + GIS technology as its foundation. Through thorough literature studies and case analyses, this research holds both theoretical value and practical significance. The findings highlight that road and bridge engineering, when based on BIM + GIS technology, can not only achieve a 1:1 virtual world representation through virtual reality, but also improve the efficiency of engineering design for designers. Additionally, with the aid of visualization technology, construction and growth videos of road and bridge engineering can be generated, allowing designers and construction personnel to anticipate and understand the construction content and progress of road and bridge projects in advance. © 2023 IEEE.
