Abstract This chapter explores the novel combination of quantum computing and digital twin technologies. Digital twins, or digital replicas of physical systems, have improved municipal management and environmental sustainability. However, quantum computing can boost their performance. The chapter covers digital twins' role in smart cities and urban growth. Next, the chapter explains quantum computing's fundamentals and contrasts classical and quantum computing. Digital twins in quantum systems are discussed, showing how “smart” communities may exploit this technology. The main issue is digital twins for quantum computing. Real-world case studies show successful implementations and imaginative applications in various urban domains. These include energy optimization, transportation, infrastructure management, and environmental monitoring. This chapter discusses quantum simulation and the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence to ensure the accuracy and reliability of quantum computing digital twins. It addresses cybersecurity and robustness concerns for quantum digital twins. Digital twins in quantum computing may affect urban sustainability, predictive maintenance, and data-driven decision-making. Quantum twins' role in greener city planning and environmental protection is examined. Scalability and ethical issues are challenges in the industry despite its tremendous promises. Ultimately, we discuss how quantum computing-created digital twins transform sustainable urbanization for a brighter future. © 2025 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
