Abstract The increasing amount of solid waste, driven by population growth, particularly in urban areas, poses a significant challenge for local governments, impacting important aspects of our standard of living such as socio-economic and environmental factors. In this context, the utilization of Internet of Things (IoT) technology emerges as a practical solution. This study suggests a novel waste management framework that integrates IoT devices into trash bins to monitor their capacity, aiding in the identification of bins in need of collection. Through the application of the ABC Algorithm, which draws inspiration from the efficient food-gathering behavior of bees, we optimize the routes for waste collection to reduce time and resource consumption. By alleviating traffic congestion and maximizing the efficiency of workforce and resources in intelligent urban settings, our methodology offers significant improvements to waste management practices. © 2024 ACM.
