Abstract Waste management is a critical issue in smart cities. Improper management of the wastes leads to unsanitary conditions and escalates operational costs. Efficient techniques reduce environmental pollution and enhance citizens' overall health and well-being. However, several challenges are associated with waste management: timely waste collection, adequate response to dynamic waste generation patterns, and underutilized/overutilized usage of bins and human resources. Recently, researchers have used Internet of Things (IoT) devices (sensors and actuators) to deal with these challenges. However, their data is frequently pushed to the cloud server without edge processing, which leads to unnecessary delay, bandwidth consumption, and untimely decisions. This paper presents a predictive analysis-based IoT-enabled smart bins (PISB) system using IoT devices. Here, the processing is performed on edge devices to improve energy efficiency, and predictive analysis is performed in the cloud server using a fitness function for proactive decisions. Specifically, each smart bin is equipped with HC-SR04 ultrasonic, methane quality (MQ)9, MQ135 and passive infrared (PIR) motion sensors, an Arduino Uno Rev3 microcontroller, a JHD162A liquid-crystal display (LCD), and an Espressif (ESP)01 wireless fidelity (WiFi) module. The proposed system regularly monitors bin levels, hazardous gases, and air quality and uses the Thingspeak platform to store and analyze the collected data. Moreover, the proposed system offers an efficient route for waste collection using the vehicle routing problem. We compare our smart bin with recently developed smart bins to show its efficacy in hardware and software complexities and costs. © 2024 IEEE.
