Abstract In this paper, a smart IoT-based waste management system (IoT-WMS) is designed and implemented to be employed in smart cities eliminating their permanent monitoring requirement. This system separates wet and dry wastes and collects them in distinct places, monitors the amount of waste deposited in each dumpster, and in case of their fullness, an alert message activates the nearest garbage collection system based on a considered routing algorithm. In this context, each dumpster is equipped with moisture and ultrasonic sensors to determine the waste kinds and lead them to the appropriate bin besides measuring the capacity of each dumpster. The capacity of each place is compared to a defined threshold and in case of meeting it, the central system is alerted to streamline the routing process for garbage collection machines. This routing process, determines the optimal sequence for emptying the full bins, thereby maximizing efficiency and minimizing travel time for the garbage collection vehicles. Several experiments are performed to study the efficiency of our proposed system in different scenarios and its efficiency is good in all of them. © 2024 IEEE.
