Abstract The dramatic expansion in global industrial activity over the past couple of centuries has also significantly increased the usage of energy derived from petroleum and coal, increasing the environmental effect and hence accelerating global warming. Because the rise of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has substantially increased energy usage, the spotlight is now on developing a more environmentally friendly IoT ecosystem. Researchers and businesses are paying close attention to the emerging topic of green IoT in smart cities. Future technology, often known as "smart green cities," places a strong emphasis on using a digital system to improve green spaces and streamline regulatory procedures. All of the equipment used in applications for smart cities is connected via the Internet of Things (IoT). Energy supply corporations, governments, and researchers are all paying close attention to blockchain technology right now, as it has evolved into a very flexible solution for the green IoT. The implementation of blockchain technology as a way of establishing an IoT that is smart, green, and efficient in terms of city energy is covered in this chapter. This chapter focuses on the growing significance of blockchain technology's role in green IoT-enabled smart cities, outlines key considerations for creating green IoT smart cities, and explores how blockchain technology contributes to greener IoT smart cities. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Vivek Kumar Singh, Anil Kumar Sagar, Parma Nand, Rani Astya and Omprakash Kaiwartya.
