Abstract	IoT is a critical component of modern urban development, driving improvements in performance, environmental sustainability, and public welfare. This research highlights IoT applications in key sectors such as transportation, safety, energy, the environment, and smart infrastructure. IoT facilitates real-time data flow and instant responses, enabling better traffic management, reduced pollution, efficient energy use, and enhanced safety. However, adopting IoT raises challenges like data security risks, high deployment costs, and compatibility issues. This paper explores the benefits of IoT for smart cities, supported by successful global examples, while addressing challenges and opportunities. Future directions include integrating blockchain and AI to enhance data security and predictive capabilities. IoT is pivotal in building sustainable, adaptive, and resilient urban infrastructures to tackle urbanization and climate change effectively. © 2025 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
