Abstract A clean environment is essential for the progress of any nation because untidy leads to immorality for both living beings and the environment. The proposed system creates smart trash, maintaining a clean and eco-friendly environment for all living beings. Since technology is becoming increasingly intelligent, the system uses a microcontroller-based smart dustbin that provides information when the trash is full. This will help to keep the environment clean and avoid unnecessary visits by municipality personnel when the trash is not full. The ultrasonic sensors fitted at the top of the bin will provide information about the trash level in the bin. The proposed smart bin will always be kept closed to avoid the spread of airborne disease. It consists of a proximity sensor and a servo motor that automatically opens the trash cover when the person is about to dump the trash in the smart bin. The system is equipped with an ultrasonic sensor to monitor the trash level; basically, it senses the distance from the top to the bottom of the bin when the trash reaches its maximum level, and it identifies and provides information via GSM. The prototype of the proposed smart bin has been successfully verified, its working is better, and it promotes cleanliness. © 2024 IEEE.
