Abstract Internet of Things (IoT) has potential to create smart environment using IoT devices that can communicate with each other. IoT networks of devices is essential to design the smart technology products. This is a qualitative study involving in-depth interviews of experts in IoT domain, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning domain, and large city administrators. Based on the content analysis of these interviews an IoT based smart environment implementation framework is proposed. Final framework development is based on three iterations of interviews and discussion. Framework suggests six stages to integration of smart environment development namely; data acquisition, tracking analytics, monitoring analytics, predictive modeling, automated control, and application development. The world will become smart through connecting gadgets over a network, and as a result, smart environment, that includes smart cities, smart homes, and smart buildings, will develop. In addition to smartness, IoT devices are has potential to keep our surroundings safe and secure. This paper is important for its integrative approach of developing smart environment. © 2023 IEEE.
