Abstract The article covers the role of telecommunication technologies and smart environments in the life of modern people, touches on the advantages and disadvan-tages of smart cities and smart home systems. The concept of the Internet of Things that has important social, economic and industrial value is also described in the article. The scientific concept of the Internet of Things has existed approximately since the late 1990s. IoT creates a new level of comfort and convenience for society, and many existing goods and services are hopelessly outdated. The Internet of things will make our daily life much more comfortable: “smart” household appliances will monitor the house, “smart” medical devices will monitor a person’s physical condition. Modern concepts such as the “smart city” are also largely based on the capabilities of the Internet of Things. The most common example of the Internet of Things is smart home technology. Smart homes are those in which safety, energy saving and comfort are monitored by software that integrates household appliances into a single system using data transfer technology. The use of English in Information Technology is described in the work as well. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
