Abstract Smart spaces are environments that are integrated with advanced technologies such as IoT, big data, and AI to optimize their functionality. They have evolved significantly over the past few years, expanding from smart homes to smart cities, smart buildings, and smart factories. The use of sensors and data analytics has enabled real-time monitoring, data-driven decision-making, and better resource management. Our findings revealed that smart spaces have the potential to enhance sustainability, improve quality of life, and deliver efficiency gains across various aspects. These advancements can encompass areas such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, utilization of renewable resources, and security. The importance of open standards and interoperability for smart spaces has also been highlighted, as well as the need for user-centric design. This study contributes to research in advanced technologies and how they have become enablers for real-time monitoring, data analysis, and predictive maintenance, leading to improved efficiency, reduced costs, increased safety and synergy among operable spaces. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
