Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a game-changing technology that will radically alter how we interact with the world around us. The IoT is crucial in the context of smart spaces for promoting sustainable improvement and eco-friendly surroundings. This study examines the various ways in which the Internet of Things (IoT) contributes to the idea of smart spaces, with the goal of fostering sustainability and raising the standard of living in general. By integrating the IoT into smart environments, it is possible to link and communicate with various devices and sensors with ease, facilitating the use of data in decision-making. Smart spaces can optimize resource utilization, lower energy use, and minimize waste, reducing negative effects on the environment. Additionally, IoT-powered smart environments give consumers the power to make educated decisions, promoting eco-friendly habits and sustainable practices. In this chapter, the role of the IoT in sustainable enhancement in smart spaces is explained. The different kinds of smart spaces are described, followed by the different types of sensors used in smart spaces. A detailed explanation is provided of the importance and usage of the IoT in smart buildings, smart cities, smart homes, and smart factories. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
