Abstract The main focus of the paper is the development of a smart parking system for smart cities. The system is designed to improve parking management and reduce traffic congestion by leveraging IoT technology, particularly the LoRa network protocol. The paper discusses the architecture of the system, which includes sensors, gateways, and vehicles, all communicating via the LoRa protocol. The sensors are placed in the centre of parking spaces and use a magnetometer to detect the presence of vehicles, while the gateways, which are traffic lights or street lights, act as gateways and communicate with both the parking lot and the vehicles. The system also uses the MQTT protocol to enable communication between the gateways and the server for further processing and analysis. The paper also discusses the implementation of the system, including the use of LoRa and the integration of the LoRa protocol with the Internet. The system aims to provide real-time data on parking availability, reduce congestion, and offer greater convenience to users by integrating sensors, gateways, a cloud-based platform, and a mobile application. The system is also designed to be energetically sustainable, contributing to reducing the environmental impact and improving the quality of life in the community. © 2024 IEEE.
